If you are looking for the best 8K monitor for your future-proof setup, then we have you covered right here.
Before we get into the buying guide, let’s understand what an 8K resolution is. An 8K resolution is defined as 7,680 pixels horizontally by 4,320 pixels vertically (7680 x 4320) – giving you an idea of how many pixels your GPU has to drive to render an image.
The idea of the best 8K monitor might seem a little farfetched right now; however, with the ever-evolving technology that goes into modern displays, it’s really only a matter of time before these high-resolution panels are sat on our desks. In the current market, the Dell UltraSharp UP3218K monitor is our pick of the bunch, while the Samsung 57″ Odyssey Neo G9 offers an ultrawide horizontal 8K alternative. As a currently niche market, we’ll make sure to keep you updated with the latest 8K displays. Look towards our best 5K monitor guide if you want more choice for super high-resolution displays.

The world’s first 8K monitor came to fruition thanks to the ingenuity of Dell. The Ultrasharp 8K monitor might be the first of its kind, but it comes with a price tag that far exceeds the expectations and limits of most buyers. It is designed for professionals and is a high-end piece of tech.
Aesthetically, the UltraSharp features the brand’s subtle design language and displays no flashy RGB or sharp angles. Instead, the UP3218K opts for a simple design characterized by thin bezels, a square metallic stand, and a slender profile. It’s the display itself that is here to impress. Right off the bat, it sits at 32 inches, which is above many standards we see in gaming, such as 24 inches or 27 inches.
Looks aside, the UltraSharp isn’t going to blow anyone away as far as gaming performance is concerned. At the heart of this 8K monitor lies a 60Hz IPS panel that delivers a peak brightness of 400 nits and offers a wide viewing angle. The response time of this monitor runs at 8ms (out of the box) or 6ms when it is in fast mode – meaning it will likely fall victim to motion blur and smearing. Let’s be honest, though; this was never meant to be a gaming monitor – tailored more towards editors and creative types. The UP3218K certainly delivers excellent color reproduction thanks to Dell’s Premiercolor technology – offering 100% Adobe RGB, 100% sRGB, 100% Rec. 709, and 98% DCI-P3 color coverage. Each panel is also said to be factory-calibrated out of the box, offering up an average deltaE <2. This is all packed into a standard 16:9 aspect ratio.
Inputs include 2x DisplayPort, USB upstream, USB downstream, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

- Only horizontal 8K
The Odyssey Neo G9 has been updated (from its older 49-inch model) with a larger 57″ VA LCD backlit with Quantum Dot & Mini LED panel technology, making this model (G95NC) the world’s first 8K gaming monitor with a resolution of 7,680 x 2,160. Note that it is only a horizontal 8K rather than a full 8K resolution due to the dual UHD (4K) ultrawide resolution, which is essentially two 4K monitors side by side (and a large curve to keep as much as possible in view at one time).
It has a maximum refresh rate of 240Hz and utilizes the new DisplayPort 2.1 spec for faster data transmission. Similar to its predecessor, the new Neo G9 has a 1000R curvature and is VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certified – offering stunning HDR performance in both gaming and content consumption scenarios. If you want to go all out and upgrade to one of the best ultrawide gaming monitors on the market, then the latest Neo G9 is the one for you.
The alarming thing, however, is the price tag this monitor retails for – an MSRP of $2,499.99 at launch. That’s actually not as high as some predictions prior to the big price reveal, sitting around the same level as its 49″ predecessor. It’s not too bad, considering, but it’s still a hefty price to pay. If you want a close comparison, see our 57″ Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 vs Acer Predator Z57 page!

The latest update on this monitor appears to show that it has been canceled for the time being. We’ll have to wait and see what comes of this project in the future. You can see a reference to the product being put on hold from this ViewSonic tweet. ViewSonic officially announced the ColorPro VP3286-8K back in January 2021. However, it still hasn’t come to fruition. If and/or when it does, it looks set to impress. Considering a lack of interest for 8K monitors as of late, though, it may never make it to the market in this form.
ViewSonic has given the new 8K monitor a subtle design that is fairly in keeping with the rest of the monitors the brand has designed in the past. Users should expect thin bezels, a subtle color scheme, and limited gaming nonsense.
As far as performance goes, there are still a few blanks in the specification list of this panel. It will likely feature a similar 5-8ms response time as DELL’s offering – alongside the same 60Hz refresh rate. Of course, the monitor will deliver a native 8K resolution, decent colors right out of the box, and a plethora of connectivity support. Speaking of colors, rumors suggest that we should expect an extremely wide color gamut that is in the region of 99% Adobe RGB. At the current stage, there is no indication of HDMI 2.1 support, nor are we expecting high refresh rates or gaming-tailored features in the OSD.
That being said, this is certainly a monitor geared towards creatives, editors, and multi-tasking scenarios. If it ever sees the light of day.
8K monitors vs 4K monitors: What’s the difference?
One thing to talk about is how 8K monitors and 4K monitors match up against each other. Although there is sort of a middle-ground for 5K monitors at the moment, this aren’t so common either and are generally designed for creators – such as the Apple Studio Display – or even their 6K Pro Display XDR if you want to one-up it.
We expect 8K to be the next big step up for gaming, but this has yet to become a reality as the technology to power it just isn’t there yet. 4K has already solidified itself as the high-end choice for gamers, as we can now enjoy higher refresh rates such as 144Hz with the best graphics cards on the market.
4K monitors | 8K monitors | |
---|---|---|
Resolution | 3840 x 2160 (16:9) | 7680 x 4320 (16:9) |
Pixel count | 8,294,400 | 33,177,600 |
Ideal for | Everyday use, gaming, media consumption | Everyday use, creators |
Common screen size | 27″ or 32″ for 16:9, up to 57″ for ultrawide | 32″ or higher for 16:9 |
Cost | Varied, can be as cheap as under $400 for budget picks | Can cost more than $3000 or $4000 |
As you can see in the table above, 8K offers a massive step up in terms of pixel count. As such, 8K monitors right now stick around the 60Hz refresh rate mark as they are designed for productivity and image clarity over gaming performance. Likewise, 8K media is much more sparse and generally upscales from the much more commonplace 4K resolution to accommodate the higher resolution, meaning most media (such as TV shows and movies) aren’t true 8K at all.
Overall, a 4K monitor is the better choice for most people. Jumping up to 8K will definitely make a huge difference for productivity and everyday use, but the rest of the industry isn’t quite ready to make full use of it just yet.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best 8K monitor?
Right now, the Dell UltraSharp UP3218K is the best 8K monitor on the market – showcasing excellent picture quality, aesthetics, and good value for money.
Do 8K 120Hz monitors exist?
At the time of writing this, 8K monitors seem to be limited to around 60Hz. This is no real surprise as when 4K monitors hit market, they too only offered a bog-standard 60Hz refresh rate.
That said, there are a number of 8K TVs that feature faster 120Hz refresh rates, so it’s really only a matter of time before monitors feature the same amount of hertz. The closest you’ll find right now is the horizontal 8K Samsung Odyssey Neo G9, boasting a high 240Hz, albeit not at full 8K.
Are 8K monitors worth it?
At this early stage, it’s hard to decisively say whether or not 8K monitors are worth it – especially when you consider just how demanding they can be. That being said, there’s no denying the visual quality they bring to the table – far exceeding anything else that’s in today’s market. An 8K monitor can be a great addition to your setup, especially for tasks such as photo or video editing for you graphic designers out there.
Are 8K monitors good for gaming? 8K 144Hz monitor news
Despite plenty of excitement surrounding the idea of 8K monitors, the chances of them being good for gaming are fairly slim.
8K monitors are still in this infant stage, and the few we have on the market stick to 60Hz range. You’ll have to opt for a 120Hz TV if you want to enjoy a high refresh rate. We’re sure that 8K 144Hz monitors will on their way in future, as this is the natural progression, but we can’t really say when right now. Even if they did, the hardware to power high refresh rate gaming at 8K just isn’t here yet. The best graphics cards in 2024 still struggle to push 144 frames per second on 4K monitors in AAA games, so upping that to 8K would only see a reduction in performance. Dual 4K & horizontal 8K is demanding enough.
All being said, 8K monitors right now are designed as more immersive-type panels. They should be used for video editing, content creation, or everyday panels – with 8K gaming monitors coming sometime after.
Is 8K supported by PS5 and Xbox Series X?
While both Xbox Series X and PS5 do support 8K, the amount of available content rendered in 8K is incredibly slim. At present, there is only one game that actually utilizes the 8K resolution. However, due to the nature of consoles right now, the PS5 will actually downscale the game to 4K to enable it to work efficiently.
Ultimately, while both consoles do support 8K resolution, neither has it enabled. Once 8K resolution content becomes more available (in both games and film), both consoles will be able to render it natively. But until then, 8K console gaming is a pipe dream. We’ll likely hit the next generation of consoles like the PS6 before 8K gaming is even close to being a reality, because the current generation won’t really perform well at 8K in any mildly-demanding game.
That being said, our comprehensive guides on the best gaming monitor for PS5 and best gaming monitor for Xbox Series X do showcase some of the best options in today’s market – many of which feature high-end specifications, backlight technology, and resolutions.
Final word
