What is a Retina Display?
The Retina Display is Apple’s revolutionary invention in screen technology that came back with the iPhone 4, which had an (at the time) impressive 960 x 640 resolution. This technology helped Apple to create a display where the pixels are so densely packed that they are invisible to the naked eye when used at regular viewing distance. The normal viewing distance for iPhone, according to Apple, is 10-inches. It is 15-inches for the iPads.

How does a Retina Display perform compared to a 4K display?
iPad Pro Retina displays undoubtedly look great, but they are not 4K. For normal viewing purposes and general use, the 2732 x 2048 screen on the 12.9″ version will probably be indistinguishable for most people from 4K resolution, looking equally as clear. However, if you’re watching or working with 4K video or photo media, it won’t match up to the functionality offered by a genuine 3840 x 2160 4K screen, as you won’t be able to view it max screen at native resolution.
The idea behind Apple’s Retina Display is to make them as clear as possible to the human eye by creating a specific (non-typical) resolution. So, even if the pixel count was increased close to the 4K resolution, it would not be exactly 3840 x 2160.
Increasing the resolution to this would also increase the asking price of the device, as well as its battery consumption, though we’ll still likely see one of these devices in the years to come.
