The Razer Power UP V2 is a great starter kit for any gamer, even more so for those already experienced in gaming and want to take their performance to the next level. Let’s kick start by looking at the mouse. It’s the Razer Deathadder Essential which, for me is a great all-around mouse that offers fantastic grip, stunning aesthetics, and a design that is both elegant and gamey. It comes equipped with a very accurate 6,400 DPI optical sensor that offers great tracking, very little acceleration, and good in-game performance. Whilst this is a fairly basic mouse, it feels great for FPS shooters thanks to its lightweight design.

Moving onto the keyboard, the bundle offers up the Razer Cynosa, their entry-level membrane keyboard. While this isn’t mechanical, it still offers up a great amount of gaming potential. The dome switches feel fairly responsive and require low-medium actuation force.

Finally, and unlike many combos in this list, the Razer combo comes equipped with a mouse pad as well – the Razer Gigantus V2. This pad offers a soft finish that is very effective when it comes to gaming – especially ones that require pinpoint accuracy. The dome switches in this board and extremely responsive and come equipped with a mechanical-esque actuation. Now, I’m not saying this thing is as good as a mechanical board because it’s not. But comparing it to other membrane alternatives, it’s not half bad. The keyboard comes with RGB that can be customized in the Corsair software suite for brilliant aesthetic results.

The mouse is Corsair’s Harpoon RGB Pro, a mouse we’ve put to the test in numerous other scenarios in the past. While this mouse is entry-level, we still think this mouse showcases fantastic value for money – especially when you take its lightweight design and sensor performance into consideration. The sensor is the PMW 3320 which, yes, is a little outdated. However, for the hobbyists out there that don’t want to break the bank, this will serve them extremely well. The Harpoon comes with attractive RGB and a design that should please most people – albeit a little on the smaller side.

The bundle also comes equipped with a Void Pro headset and MM100 mouse pad to really get you up and running. The mouse pad offers a smooth finish which is great for tracking and accuracy. The headset is one we’ve tested in the past and got our seal of approval for being immersive and spatially aware.

Mouse considerations

USB ports

This is also a keyboard consideration, but we aren’t going to include it twice. As with most consoles, the number of USB ports is very limited, The PS4 and PS4 slim only have two USB inputs to plug a mouse and keyboard into. The PS4 Pro fairs slightly better with three USB inputs to plug peripherals into. However, it’s still not great as you’re probably be using one of the USB ports already with a headset or controller plugged in to charge.

In summary, it might be worth picking up a USB hub to increase the number of inputs you can plug things into. A decent USB hub can be found very cheap. Bluetooth devices

It’s also worth mentioning, that if you’re limited by the available USB ports on the PS4, and don’t wish to get a USB hub, Bluetooth devices are worth looking into, as the PS4 supports Bluetooth mice and keyboards, freeing up precious USB ports. Bluetooth devices like this do have a tendency to have a little more latency than their wireless equivalents, but as Bluetooth devices get better and better, the latency is slowly beginning to become negligible.

One of the first things every gamer should consider when looking to buy a new mouse is the sensor it comes equipped with. The sensor is the most important factor when we discuss a mouse’s performance and dictates how accurate your movements will be.

The sensor sits at the bottom of the mouse and tracks the movements we make when gaming or browsing the web. Sensors have come a long way in the last decade or so, with the latest offerings bringing almost flawless performance to the table.

Whilst a lot of sensors are being produced by mice manufacturers these days, most are variations of the Pixart 3360/3389 – two of the best sensors available. These sensors provide the most accurate tracking, alongside a number of other benefits such as limited spin-out and high IPS.

As a general rule, if you’re looking to play competitive FPS shooters, always look for the best sensor available. However, if you’re playing MMO’s or RTS style games, the sensor won’t have as much of an impact on your game.

Another thing to consider with the sensor is its DPI. This stands for dots per inch and is a way of measuring the mouse’s max sensitivity. The higher the DPI, the more sensitive the mouse can be. Having said that, I wouldn’t worry too much about DPI. Most gamers don’t exceed 1,200 in modern-day gaming.

Shape, size, and weight

The second most important factor to consider when purchasing a mouse is its shape, size, and weight – in other words, its design. The design of a mouse plays a key role in your overall performance as not every mouse shape suits every hand size/grip style.

Fear not though, mice come in a whole plethora of shapes and sizes, catering to literally every type of hand size and grip style. As a general rule, we would recommend a shape that feels nice in your hand for most gaming styles. However, if you are looking to play competitive shooters (Call of Duty, etc) we recommend getting a mouse that is lightweight in design.

Having a lightweight gaming mouse will allow you to have quicker reflexes, potentially be more accurate, and actually game for longer – thanks to the reduced stress and strain on your arm.

Build quality

Build quality is a fairly simple factor to explain, it’s the physical construction of the mouse and how good the materials are. Because mice can now cost you well over $100 (the best wireless gaming mice for example), you need to know that your mouse is built to stand the test of time. You do not want a high-end mouse breaking in two months’ time.

Luckily, all the mice selections we chose have been tested for robustness and longevity. And whilst not all of them are what we class as, “premium quality”, they all fit their respective price points well.

Ergonomics

Finally, we have ergonomics. Usually, this means that the product has been designed to interact better with humans – in this case, your hand. However, in mice, this usually means they have been designed specifically for the right or left-handed users.

Having said that, for a lot of hobbyists, the general thinking is that switches probably won’t make a great deal of difference to their gaming performance. And if truth be told, that was my way of thinking as well. However, going from membrane to mechanical switches is like night and day. The difference is clear and apparent – in more than just gaming too.

Keeping this as short as possible, if you’re looking for a quiet actuation and spongey keypresses, a membrane keyboard is exactly what you’re looking for. A select number of typists prefer this style of keyboard.

If you’re looking for rapid actuation, instant tactile response, low travel time, and don’t mind a clicky sound when you type, a mechanical keyboard is 100% the way to go.

Form factor

The form factor is actually fairly important when considering your next keyboard, mainly because smaller form factors physically don’t have the same number of keys as full-size keyboards.

When referencing the form factor in a keyboard, we refer to its size and how many keys it has to offer. The main form factors for keyboards are:

• 60%

Full size is the most generic size of keyboard available, offering a full set of letters, numbers,  and function keys – including a number pad.

A TKL keyboard Is identical to the full-size form factor, but it lacks the at-this-point archaic Numpad

A 60% keyboard, however, is where things get a little more interesting. At this size, many of the keys get compromised to reduce the overall footprint of the board. Users lose most of the function keys and the number pad.

Users do actually have the option to go smaller than this, with a 40% keyboard that really does whittle things down to the bare minimum. Having said that, I think even 60% is pushing as far as gaming is concerned. Whilst you can still play games relatively easily, these boards simply don’t have the same level of versatility as the TKL and full-size alternatives.

As we mentioned above with the mice, build quality for keyboards is a pretty self-explanatory factor which refers to materials used and overall construction quality.
